SUMMARY

Ultra rare coveted piece of Land Rover history ready for summertime road trips.

DESCRIPTION

Background
The Series Land Rovers were the models that established the company’s reputation for rugged, go-anywhere capability. Launched in 1948 as an extremely utilitarian four-wheel drive vehicle, capable of tackling almost any terrain in virtually any conditions, they were used by farmers, the military, emergency and utility services, royalty, VIPs and the general public.

The Car
First registered on 23rd November 1964, this Series II was purchased new by Searle to be converted into one of their camper conversions.

This vehicle is completely original, as sold by Searle in December 1964 to the first keeper. Service paperwork, Land Rover and Searle handbooks accompany the vehicle, along with 'buff' registration documents detailing the transfer of ownership to the second owner, who purchased it in May 1965 for £1,345 at the Olympia Motor Show — trading in his Sunbeam for £400.

The vendor purchased the vehicle from the second owner at his country residence, where the Land Rover had been garaged in his stable block and laid dormant for a few years. Prior to being laid up, it had been used for many holidays with his wife, including several ventures into Europe — one of which he recalled was a trip to Monaco.

Since then, the Land Rover has undergone a ‘mini’ restoration. It has been serviced, the brakes overhauled, the exhaust replaced, the chassis steam cleaned and wax-oiled, the steel wheels repainted and the front seats reupholstered in matching material. It has also been road tested. Mechanically, it runs well, having covered only 31,324 miles from new. The drivetrain operates smoothly and the 2,286cc petrol engine starts readily with little choke from cold, running as smoothly as a Swiss watch.

In summary, this is a rare opportunity to own a wonderful piece of Land Rover heritage.
