SUMMARY
An elegant and capable modern classic with style and practicality in equal measure.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Introduced in the early 2000s, the R230 generation of Mercedes-Benz’s storied SL-Class signalled a bold new chapter in the marque’s long-standing tradition of luxury grand touring. Sleek, sophisticated, and underpinned by advanced electronics and a folding metal hardtop, the SL blended comfort, performance, and elegance in equal measure.
The SL350, powered by a refined V6, emerged as the sweet spot in the range — delivering an engaging drive with a balance of performance and economy. It offered just enough drama for weekend jaunts, without ever compromising its ability to glide effortlessly through everyday life.
The Car:
This particular SL350, registered in late 2007, has led a well-cared-for life with just three owners from new. Finished in Iridium Silver with a full black leather interior, it remains remarkably well presented, showing just 78,900 miles. It has clearly been cherished and thoughtfully maintained throughout its life — a fact underscored by a history file that reflects no fewer than 15 documented services, the most recent of which was carried out in September 2024 at 78,545 miles.
Mechanically, the car performs exactly as it should. The 3.5-litre V6 pulls smoothly and eagerly through the gears, and the car rides with a composed ease that remains impressive nearly two decades on. The folding hardtop roof operates cleanly and efficiently, transforming the car from a serene coupé into a wind-in-the-hair roadster in a matter of seconds.
Inside, the condition is excellent. The electrically adjustable leather seats remain supple and undamaged, the switchgear is crisp, and all interior panels show minimal wear. The only point to note is the top-mounted hazard warning button, which, made of a softer material, has become slightly tacky to the touch — a common quirk for the model.
The exterior presents well, though with some early signs of corrosion starting to appear around the outer edges of the wheel arches. These are clearly photographed and are not yet deeply ingrained — they could easily be addressed during the course of future ownership without detracting from the car’s overall enjoyment.
This car’s mechanical upkeep is worthy of particular note. At its last major service in 2024, over £2,000 was spent to replace both rear calipers, both front shock absorbers, the driveshaft ABS ring, and the upper and lower ball joints. Prior to that, in 2021, a further £2,400 was invested in a gearbox service, SAM unit replacement, new brake components front and rear, and a host of other improvements — testament to the car’s diligent custodianship.
The car wears a matching set of Continental tyres, all fitted in late 2019 at 73,820 miles. It has remained in stable, long-term ownership since 2018 and is offered today by a private seller who has kept it in careful condition.
An elegant and capable modern classic, this SL350 represents excellent value for a model with presence, provenance, and practicality in equal measure.
