SUMMARY
An early example of Volkswagen's return to form for the GTi line-up. A true hot-hatch, versatile and fun.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Mk5 Golf GTi marked a return to form for VW’s longstanding hot-hatch, the model having debuted in 1976 to enduring adoration. The versatility of practicality and performance revolutionised the way we think about performance cars. Later Mk3 and Mk4 variants proved less popular than their contemporaries. The Mk5, introduced in 2004, came as a welcome relief for fans and has been hailed as a model that corrected the path of the GTi lineage.
The GTi’s grunt came in the form of a turbocharged 2-litre 4-pot producing 197bhp and a healthy 207lb/ft of torque, mated in this case to a 6-speed manual. With the combination of accessible punch, newly designed independent rear suspension and electromechanical steering, the Mk5 established itself as one of the best hot-hatches of its generation.
The Car:
This particular example has covered a moderate 120,000 miles and comes with a fully stamped service book, with the most recent service done on 5th March this year. The all-important cambelt and water pump service is also documented as having been completed at 117,000 miles.
The exterior presents well with the usual marks and stone chips expected of a now 21 year old car. The original front wings do show signs of the infamous oxidation coming through, however the paint hasn’t broken and is still presentable. Recently refurbished alloys also go some way to lifting the appearance.
As part of GTi tradition, the tartan cloth seats have been optioned in this car and they present incredibly well with no rips or stains. New Volkswagen floor mats also refresh the cabin significantly. The usual peeling of VW switchgear from this era can be noticed on some buttons, though all equipment is reported as working.
Overall, this Golf GTi represents a fun, usable and practical hot-hatch that can be enjoyed or pressed into daily service. The most recent MOT, expiring 3rd December 2025, notes 'no advisories', as did the one before it. A lot of car for the sensible estimate.
This car is offered directly from yours truly in the consignment team at Iconic Auctioneers and it has proved an excellent car, ideal for commuting or a Sunday morning blast.
