SUMMARY

One of 500 Wedgewood editions with just 31,000 miles and presented in a pristine condition.

DESCRIPTION

Background:

Unveiled to widespread acclaim at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show, the MGF marked MG’s first all-new model in over three decades—an eagerly awaited return that did not disappoint. The debut drew immediate attention thanks to a compelling combination of advanced engineering and smart design.

At its core, the MGF showcased cutting-edge features rarely seen in its class at the time. Among the highlights were a mid-engine layout, Hydragas suspension, and electric-assisted power steering—each contributing to the car’s agile and engaging driving experience. Power came from the acclaimed K-series engine, now expanded to 1.8 litres, with the VVC (Variable Valve Control) variant boasting a sophisticated variable valve timing system that further enhanced performance.

Stylistically, the MGF struck a careful balance between heritage and innovation. Designers paid homage to classic MGs, particularly the MGB, while also embracing a bold, contemporary look that confidently signaled the brand’s rebirth. The result was a roadster that appealed to both purists and a new generation of drivers—an instant modern classic.

Building on this success, MG introduced the Wedgwood SE—the first limited edition based on the MY2000 MGF. Continuing the tradition of distinctive special editions, the Wedgwood SE arrived in a striking, model-exclusive shade of Wedgwood Blue. It featured a host of enhanced standard equipment, including leather upholstery, a CD player, chrome accents inside and out, and stylish 16-inch multispoke alloy wheels. Notably, it was also the first MGF to feature a rear deck spoiler as standard, adding a subtle sporting edge to an already well-balanced design.

It’s believed that BMW impeded MG in making a more luxury version of the MGF, fearing it would become to close of a competitor to the parent companies Z3 Roaster. But, once MG had been sold in the late 1990’s, MG were free to do as they saw git with the platform. All culminating in the MGF SE.

The Car:

This Wedgewood Edition presented here was ordered of October 2000 and now showing just 31,000 miles on the clock, and just two previous keepers. This could well be one of the best examples left on British roads. So good in fact this very car has featured in editorial road tests and even magazine covers.

Cosmetically there are very few signs of wear anywhere in the vehicle, which for a vehicle of this age and originality is testament to the care that both previous owners have bestowed upon it. Minor marks can be found on one allow, boot spoiler and centre console, otherwise the car is in perfect condition.

Mechanically the car is excellent. Smooth gear changes and retaining its sweet handling, while being pushed along by that fizzy 1.8. It’s believed that the original owner had changed the head gasket just prior to the sale to its current owner. However, there is no evidence to back up this claim at this point, but when compared to how the rest of the car was cared for it seems unlikely this was a false statement.
