SUMMARY
A unique opportunity to obtain one of Jaguar's most elegant designs in an extremely rare colour combination. An excellent restoration project.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Jaguar XJ-S - later rebranded as the XJS - was a luxury grand tourer that carved out a distinct identity over a two-decade production run from 1975 to 1996. Offered in coupé, fixed-profile, and full convertible variants, the XJS became Jaguar’s longest-running model, with 115,413 units produced over 20 years and seven months.
Built on the platform of the XJ saloon, the XJS drew attention with its unconventional rear buttresses and bold styling - a design partly shaped by Malcolm Sayer, Jaguar’s pioneering aerodynamicist. Sayer, known for applying advanced aerodynamic principles to car design, passed away in 1970 before the styling was finalized.
Launched in the shadow of a global fuel crisis, the XJS arrived at a time when a 5.3-litre V12 grand tourer seemed out of step with the market. Yet Jaguar pressed forward, replacing the iconic E-Type with a car that reflected a dramatic shift in design and purpose.
The final chapter of the XJS story began in 1991, after Jaguar’s acquisition by Ford. Under new ownership, the model underwent numerous refinements, including the quiet removal of the hyphen from its name. Despite the changes, the XJS remained true to its roots as a distinctive blend of performance, luxury, and long-distance elegance.
The car:
The car presented here is in a rare and brilliantly classical specification, finished in gloss black over cognac leather interior. Paired with Jaguar’s legendary V12, automatic box and soft top roof, perfect for the summer.
This car is a prime candidate for restoration, as there is patches of rust around the car, which has been documented in the photography provided as best as possible. While the car is considered a restoration project, mechanically it seems to be in fair condition. Running, driving and stopping, the engine runs smoothly with no smoke or nasty noises from this silky smooth V12.
The interior remains in good condition, the seats, steering wheel or gear selector don’t show excessive wear. There are however areas that will need addressing, the wood lacquer, some gauges and missing carpet.
Once completed this would be a lovely and rare example of Jaguars XJS V12, perfect for use next summer at a local show.
