SUMMARY
A solid example of Peugeot's legendary 1.6GTi looking for a light recommissioning to get it back on the road.
DESCRIPTION
Background
In many people's eyes, the Peugeot 205 was the definitive 1980s hatchback and arguably the most perfect, practical design for a small car ever. Launched in 1983, it was a brilliant rival to the Renault 5 and the Ford Fiesta, with its 'wheel at each corner' design and a kerb weight of only 875kg. No wonder it won What Car? magazine’s 'Car of the Year' in 1983 and was declared 'Car of the Decade' by CAR magazine in 1990. The 1.6-litre GTi was blessed with outstanding handling and a revvy, eager 105bhp engine and even today it remains the benchmark by which modern performance hatchbacks are judged.
The Car
This UK-registered GTi rolled off the production line in 1987, finished in Graphite Grey over a dark grey interior with the infamous red carpets.
It was off the road from 2006 until 2021, when it was recommissioned. Since then, it has seen very little use and has been dry stored in a barn. It came out briefly for an MOT in 2023, and has been stationary since. The vendor has regularly started the car in that time, moving it off the tyre spots and keeping the battery charged.
As it hasn’t been on the road for a couple of years, the GTi would benefit from a light recommissioning—particularly in areas such as the brakes, suspension, and a good old-fashioned service. The car has covered just over 92,000 miles, which is considered low for one of these. With many having been used daily since the ’90s, mileage figures have often crept much higher.
The interior, as shown in the photos, would benefit from refurbishment, with various rips in the seats and a few marks present. However, the dashboard and carpets appear to be in reasonably tidy condition and should present very well with a thorough clean.
