SUMMARY

A well maintained 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500SL (R107), previously resident in Portugal and now offered with rare Lorinser alloy wheels, major recent mechanical work and both hard and soft tops.

DESCRIPTION

Background:
The R107 generation of Mercedes-Benz SLs enjoyed an extraordinarily long production run from 1971 to 1989 and has rightly earned its place as one of the most iconic luxury convertibles of its era. Combining understated elegance with robust mechanicals, the 500 SL variant offered the most powerful engine available to European buyers at the time, featuring a smooth 5-litre V8 paired to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. With a reputation for build quality and refinement, the R107 continues to attract collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate its blend of style, usability and prestige.

The Car:
Supplied new in the UK in 1984, this 500SL was later taken to Portugal by a long term English owner, where it benefited from a full bare-metal respray in Champagne Metallic. It returned to the UK in 2013 and has been in the care of its current owner for several years, during which time it has received careful attention and regular maintenance.

The car is presented today with 98,500 miles and in very smart overall condition. The interior features black leatherette with period-correct M-B Tex checked cloth inserts, offering a stylish and comfortable contrast to the exterior finish. A new soft top has recently been fitted, while the included factory hardtop remains in excellent unrestored condition.

One of the standout features of this example is the set of rare Lorinser alloy wheels, which are genuine period items sourced as new-old-stock just two years ago. The original factory wheels are also included in the sale, offering the next owner flexibility in presentation.

Recent work includes:
• Full overhaul of the entire fuel system, including a brand new genuine metering unit
• Comprehensive gearbox service
• Undersealing and rust protection treatment
• Four excellent tyres
• New front grille
• Aftermarket stereo system (original Blaupunkt Cambridge unit included)

Mechanically strong and visually impressive, this 500SL is accompanied by a history file detailing recent work, along with earlier documentation. The car has clearly been cherished and presents as a well-rounded, drivable classic with elegant period styling and strong provenance.

Documentation includes:
• Service history and receipts
• Photographs from previous restoration
• Current and previous MOT certificates
• Original stereo included
• Both sets of wheels
