DESCRIPTION

Background:
During the golden era of British motoring, Crayford Engineering carved out a niche as the go-to coachbuilder for factory-backed convertible conversions. One of their more distinctive projects was the transformation of the Ford Cortina MK3 into a fully open-top tourer – a stylish and unique twist on one of the nation’s best-loved saloon cars. With Ford never offering a factory convertible in this generation, Crayford’s conversions remain highly desirable today, both for their rarity and their bespoke craftsmanship.

Only a small number of these MK3 Cortina GTs were ever converted by Crayford, and it’s believed that just 10 examples remain in existence today – making this a true collector’s piece.

The Car:
This beautiful MK3 Cortina GT Crayford Convertible has emerged from enthusiast long-term ownership, and presents as a rot-free, mechanically sound example that has undergone extensive and considered restoration work, totalling approximately £15,000.

Upon acquiring the car, the previous owner sought complete peace of mind, commissioning Steve Hall to carry out major works. The underside of the vehicle was shot-blasted, treated, and repainted, with any required panels replaced – resulting in a pristine, protected chassis. At the same time, every water pipe, fuel line, and brake hose was replaced. The suspension was polybushed, a new exhaust system installed, and the engine upgraded with electronic ignition.

The engine itself was subject to a full professional rebuild by Paul Inch, and has covered just 60 miles since completion – offering smooth and reliable performance for years to come. Inside, the cabin was re-trimmed at a cost of £2,500, restoring its period character while enhancing comfort.

The car also sits on four brand-new alloy wheels, shod with four new tyres, further contributing to its road-readiness.

While the convertible hood remains watertight, it is noted to be in poor cosmetic condition and may require replacement for aesthetic peace of mind. Additionally, as the vehicle has not been resprayed, there are two minor rust bubbles – one on a front wing and another on the bonnet. These are cosmetic in nature and do not detract from the car’s mechanical integrity or driving enjoyment.

A true summer cruiser, this rare MK3 Crayford Cortina offers immediate classic motoring enjoyment, with scope to enhance and add value over time – a compelling prospect for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
