SUMMARY

1968 Jaguar 340 manual, beautifully restored and maintained ready for its next custodian

DESCRIPTION

Background
The Jaguar 340, introduced in 1967, marked the final chapter in the illustrious life of the Jaguar Mk2 saloon, serving as a transitional model before Jaguar shifted focus toward newer designs. Effectively a cost-reduced and lightly updated version of the Mk2 3.4-litre, the 340 retained the celebrated 3.4-litre XK straight-six engine, offering 210bhp and the refined, smooth driving experience that had made the Mk2 such a favourite among both performance enthusiasts and discerning motorists.

While the mechanical underpinnings remained largely unchanged, Jaguar streamlined production by simplifying trim levels and using more economical materials—most notably replacing some of the burr walnut veneer with more basic finishes and switching to slimmer front and rear bumpers. Despite these cost-saving measures, the 340 preserved much of the charm and elegance of the earlier Mk2s, still featuring leather seats, polished detailing and the brand’s signature grille and sweeping lines. The model also benefited from improved radial-ply tyres, enhancing grip and handling.

Produced for only a brief period from late 1967 until September 1968, the Jaguar 340 was quickly overshadowed by the arrival of the all-new XJ6, which represented a more modern direction for the brand. However, the 340 remains a cherished model among classic car enthusiasts, appreciated for its spirited performance, graceful styling and status as the final evolution of one of Jaguar’s most beloved saloons.

The Car
Offered here is a 1968 Jaguar 340 – the final and most refined development of the legendary Mk2 line. Finished in the attractive specification of Grey with a contrasting red leather interior, this example presents beautifully and has been fully restored in recent times.

The car has been cherished by its owner for 25 years, with a history file including maintenance records, a Heritage Certificate and documented ownership history. The interior is particularly inviting, with freshly trimmed seats, polished wood veneers and period-correct instrumentation.

Mechanically, it starts on the button and runs strongly, with the vendor describing it as a ‘joy to drive’. Having recently had a considerable amount invested in its upkeep, it is ready to be enjoyed immediately.

The car retains all the hallmark features of the era - twin fuel tanks, polished chrome detailing, and the iconic leaping cat mascot atop the bonnet. It has been subject to careful, long term ownership and having recently undergone a gradual restoration, represents a fine example of British super saloon sophistication. This Jaguar 340 is ideally suited to weekend drives, classic tours, or club events.
