SUMMARY
Superbly finished Karmann Ghia with some very sought-after upgrades.
DESCRIPTION
Background
The Type 14 (Karmann Ghia) made its debut at the October 1953 Paris Auto Show as a styling concept created for Ghia by Luigi Segre. In the early 1950s, Volkswagen's only model was the Type 1 (Beetle). With an increase in post-war living standards, Volkswagen executives proposed adding a halo car to its model range and subsequently contracted the German coachbuilder Karmann for its manufacture. Karmann, in turn, collaborated with the Italian firm Ghia, which adapted styling themes previously explored for Chrysler and Studebaker to fit a Beetle floorpan widened by 300mm. The Type 14 was marketed as a practical and stylish 2+2 rather than as a true sports car. Sharing its engines with the Beetle, the Type 14's engine displacement increased over time, ultimately reaching 1,584cc and producing 60bhp.
The Car
This beautifully presented Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a true icon of mid-century motoring. Famed for its sculpted Italian lines and precision German engineering, this cherished example stands out with its stunning exterior and interior.
The interior is finished in dark red, as shown in the photos, and is nicely complemented by newly fitted grey carpets. The car will be supplied with a hamper and travel case, ideal for enjoyable weekend trips away.
The exterior is finished in silver, which pairs wonderfully with the red interior. It is in superb condition overall, with only a few minor blemishes expected for a car of its age. It is fitted with a lovely set of 5x130 Porsche Fuchs wheels, staggered with smaller wheels at the front and larger at the rear. The tyres have plenty of tread and life remaining.
The car has recently been equipped with an EvaResto full 4-way management air-ride system, which looks magnificent and operates flawlessly. An underside protection plate has also been fitted to safeguard the mechanical components.
This is a Californian import with only four previous owners and comes with a plethora of paperwork, including the VW Birth Certificate. Overall, this is a fantastic opportunity to own a truly outstanding example of a well-loved and ever-popular marque, sensibly guided and suitable for enthusiasts or any car collection.
