DESCRIPTION
Background
The Mercedes-Benz W111 is a line of full-sized luxury cars produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1959 and 1971, including four-door saloons (1959–1968) and two-door coupés and cabriolets (1961–1971). The saloons’ bodywork featured distinctive pointed tailfins that gave the models their Heckflosse nickname — German for "fintail".
The coupé version of the W111 appeared in 1960 and was distinguished from the saloons of the range by its more luxurious and lavishly equipped interior, as well as exterior styling, which was a squarer, more modern-looking version of the saloon.
The W111’s refinement was further enhanced by the fitting of a range of smooth and powerful straight-six engines. This particular car features the 2.2-litre M127 engine, which provides a nice blend of refinement, performance, and relative economy. In this application, the engine features Bosch multipoint fuel injection and was originally rated at approximately 120 bhp.
The Car
This W111 was imported to the UK in 2021 and has been part of a private collection ever since. Seemingly coming from a warmer climate, it is reported to be corrosion-free throughout. Much has been spent on this elegant coupé during the current ownership, including an impressive interior retrim as well as mechanical maintenance.
The interior has undergone a very impressive retrim and is now in excellent condition. Finished in a dark red colour, it offers a perfect contrast to the white exterior. This W111 is fitted with the 2.2-litre straight-six engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. The vendor states that it is in good working order due to recent mechanical expenditure.
The exterior is finished in white with various chrome trims and accents. The coupé is much squarer and more modern-looking than the saloon; even the distinctive rear fins are reduced in size, giving the car an overall sleeker design. It is fitted with the distinctive ‘Mexican Hat’ alloys, which, along with the tyres, both appear to be in good order.
Despite its MOT and tax exemption as of April 2024, it has a valid MOT and passed with only two advisories — not bad for a Sixty-two-year-old car.
