SUMMARY
Previously in long term ownership and with less than 31,000 miles from new, this highly original 280 Brooklands is an exceptional example.
DESCRIPTION
The Capri 280 marked the final chapter in the story of Ford’s legendary coupé, first introduced in 1969. Originally conceived as a limited run of 500 turbocharged models developed by Turbo Technics and featuring gold alloy wheels, a change in production plans led to a new direction and a new name – the Capri 280.
Powered by Ford’s 2.8-litre fuel-injected V6 engine, the Capri 280 came equipped with a limited-slip differential, full leather Recaro interior and distinctive 15" seven-spoke alloy wheels. All 1,038 examples were finished exclusively in Brooklands Green, earning the model its enduring nickname, the Brooklands Capri. As a 'run-out' special, the 280 was comprehensively equipped. Six deep-set dashboard dials replaced the standard Capri’s more modest instrument cluster, accompanied by an AM radio/cassette player and a lockable glovebox, setting it apart as the most luxuriously appointed Capri ever produced.
Supplied new by Raleigh Ford Bideford and first registered on 1st August 1987 to its original owner, it remained in Devon until 1993, when it was acquired by the owner prior to our vendor who added it to his Collection based in Cheltenham, remaining there until earlier this year. Sparingly used and occasionally taken to shows, it was rewarded with Runner-Up at the 1996 Ford Spectacular at Beaulieu Motor Museum presented by Lord Montague and was later featured in Fast Ford magazine in 1998.
The most recent owner acquired it through a competition win but is now relocating abroad and reluctantly offering it for sale. It's supplied with a comprehensive history file, including the original handbooks, a stamped service book, photographs, the magazine feature, period sales brochure, numerous invoices and MOT certificates.
Presenting in superb and largely original condition, the car retains its factory specification, unmodified and true to its original form. The Brooklands Green paintwork remains in good order, while the interior is equally impressive, with well preserved leather Recaro seats. Having just received a £993 service along with other work by Williams Crawford, Porsche specialists in Saltash, Cornwall, the car is mechanically fresh and ready to be enjoyed.
When new, the Capri 280 carried a bold price tag of £11,999, an ambitious figure that likely contributed to its limited production, however the car’s rarity and appeal have only grown over time and with so few surviving on UK roads, they will no doubt continue to be sought after.
Whether added to a curated Collection as a fitting farewell to the Capri legacy, or returned to the road for spirited weekend drives, this Brooklands 280 offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy one of Ford’s classic performance models in excellent form.
