SUMMARY

One of around 20 built in right-hand drive, this fine example of De Tomaso's, Tom Tjarda-penned, Italian XJ6 competitor has been with its Marque-specialist owner for over 13 years.

DESCRIPTION

  • The De Tomaso Deauville was designed by Tom Tjaarda and the chassis by Giampaolo Dallara. De Tomaso’s design brief was that it was to be an Italian competitor to the Jaguar XJ and the similarities are plain to see, but the drivetrain was sourced from Ford as the intention was to sell the car in America
  • Just 244 were built between 1971 and 1985 of which around 20 are thought to have been right-hand drive
  • The monocoque body was hand-built to order in steel with motivation provided by a 300bhp Ford 351 Cleveland driving the rear wheels through a Ford 3-speed automatic. Suspension is fully independent all-round with disc brakes on all four corners
  • Other features include Campagnolo Magnesium wheels, ZF power-steering, air-conditioning and electric mirrors and windows
  • This Series 2 Deauville, #02148, was imported by Emelia Concessionaires and first registered to a London-based owner on 20/09/1983, making it one of the last built
  • With our vendor since 05/03/2012 and has currently covered 70,286km (43,674 miles)
  • Subsequently, marque specialists 'Three Point Four' were tasked with returning the car to top form after several years in storage (see Seller Rating). Full details and invoices (£18,000) in the history file
  • More recent expenditure includes a full service, carburettor rebuild, new tie-rod bushes, new starter motor and a new thermostat
  • With only 12 of these elegant exotic saloons believed to remain in the UK, this is a rare opportunity

Remarks

The De Tomaso Deauville was designed by Tom Tjaarda and the chassis by Giampaolo Dallara. It was first exhibited in 1970 in Turin. De Tomaso design brief to Tom Tjaarda was that it was to be an Italian competitor to the Jaguar XJ and the similarities are plain to see, but the drive-train was sourced from Ford as the intention was to sell the car in America through Ford dealerships although this did not come to fruition and the car ended up being manufactured in tiny numbers just 244 being built between 1971 and 1985 of which around 20 are thought to have been RHD. The monocoque body was hand-built to order in steel and power comes from a Ford 351 Cleveland (5.7 litre V8 delivering around 300bhp) driving the rear wheels through a Ford three-speed automatic. Suspension is fully independent all round and it has disc brakes all round too. The wheels are magnesium and were made by Campagnola and it has ZF power steering. It also has air conditioning, electric door mirrors and windows, and switchable fans to aid cooling. It is incredibly spacious inside with plenty of room in the back and it has a cavernous boot. The car is also very comfortable and has central locking and a set of factory-fitted lambswool over-rugs. The interior is trimmed with ruched magnolia leather throughout. During Alejandro De Tomasos ownership of Maserati, the Deauville chassis became the basis for the Series Three Quattroporte and the cars have similar interiors too, with the Deauville sister two door car the Longchamp (which was based on a shortened Deauville chassis) being used as the basis for the Kyalami. This series 2 De Tomaso Deauville, chassis number 02148, was imported by Emelia Concessionaires and first registered to a London based owner on 20th September 1983, making it one of the last built. I have owned it since 5th March 2012 and it is the third of three Deauvilles I have owned, (along with a GT5 Pantera and a Longchamp GTSE). The odometer reads in kilometres and had 61,880 kms on it when bought. It has 70,286 kms (around 44,000 miles) on it now. The car has had four previous owners. In the possession of one of these, it stood in a dry barn from the early nineties until 2010. When I bought it in 2012, the car was MOT and drove, but on inspection it had myriad faults and spent the next year or so at De Tomaso specialist Three-point-fours workshop in Barnsley. The work was extensive, including going through the entire electrical system, re-building the engine including a crank-shaft re-grind, brakes refurbished, exhaust system renewed, fuel tanks refurbished, gearbox gone through, suspension, steering, cooling system and air conditioning system repaired and refreshed, and the body cleaned and waxoyled. All in all, a proper job with nothing left out, and with a brief to maintain originality wherever possible. I have full details of all the work and of course, the bills which came to around 18k! I have edited the De Tomaso Drivers Club magazine for 25 years, and all the work carried during in my ownership was serialised in this magazine. There is a 110 page history file along with original documentation and I have the original guarantee and owners manual. In my village there is a garage that specialises in classic cars which is where the car has had around 4,000 pounds spent on it over the last couple of years. This included a full service, and a few glitches sorted including a carburettor rebuild, new tie-rod bushes, new starter motor and new thermostat. Whilst the car is 42 years old and no longer needs an MOT, it has a current MOT until September 2025 and passed clean last year with no advisories. It is also taxed until 1st October. In my opinion, the car drives beautifully and around 18 months ago, it featured in a video by Jack Pegoraro, on his Number 27 YouTube channel. I think Jack gives a very fair view on the car - see: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtSruWrPagQ SadlyI 'm just not driving it enough, so its time somebody else has the pleasure.
