SUMMARY
Freshly built and very well presented with over £10,000 in 'Works' parts and upgrades, ready to rally.
DESCRIPTION
Launched in 1975, the TR7 marked a radical departure for Triumph with styling by Harris Mann, its wedge-shaped body and sawn-off rear end divided opinion like no other Triumph before or after.
From 1976 to 1980, British Leyland ran a 'Works' team of TR7s in International Rallying. These cars were initially built with the 16-valve Dolomite Sprint engine but were then later switched to the Rover V8 shortly before the introduction of the new TR8 model. The TR7 V8 was most successful on tarmac events, particularly in the hands of the late Tony Pond, whose charismatic exploits driving a factory-entered Triumph TR7 fired the patriotic imagination of the public, winning in Ypres and on the Manx at a time when Triumph's competition heritage needed reviving.
Built in March 1981 as a standard TR7 Coupé and purchased as such by our vendor in 2024, this example has been rebuilt and transformed into a full-blown rally car and essentially a faithfully detailed homage to the works TR8s of the late 1970s. His plan was to enter Club and National rallies for which the car was eligible and use it to its full potential, however other commitments got in the way and his plans were shelved.
Rebuilt to an exceptionally high standard, this beautifully presented TR7 V8 rally car is packed with Works parts and plentiful upgrades throughout, offering serious performance potential in historic rallying, stage events or demonstration use.
Over £10,000 has been invested in high quality components alone, with the focus on durability, handling and period correct presentation. At the heart of the build is a freshly rebuilt 3.5-litre Rover V8, mounted in the correct Works position for improved weight distribution and driving dynamics, a key feature of the original competition TR7 V8s. The engine is mated to a stainless exhaust system and manifolds, with twin fuel pumps and an alloy radiator ensuring reliable and consistent performance.
The TR's handling benefits from an upgraded subframe and axle setup with adjustable coil-overs, a quick rack improves steering response and the brake package has been comprehensively uprated to deal with the substantial power output with a hydraulic handbrake fitted for tight stage work.
Inside, the cockpit features a professional wiring loom, plumbed-in extinguisher system, a Terratrip rally computer and a full roll cage. Supporting items such as an alloy fuel tank and Revolution alloys contribute to both the car's competition credentials and performance. 'Works'-style wide arch extensions complete the visual package, giving the TR7 the aggressive presence of its factory predecessors. Whilst the car doesn’t have current MSA papers, it has been built to specification, so we’d imagine the application process to be fairly straightforward, unlocking a serious potential for competition.
This is a freshly prepared, highly capable rally car with a strong mechanical specification and clear attention to detail throughout. Ideal for historic rally stages, demonstration events or classic competition, it represents a serious piece of kit for the enthusiast or collector looking for something a little different and very loud.
