SUMMARY
This Volkswagen Golf GTI 1600cc ‘Swallowtail’ is a superb example of the original first-generation hot hatch, now restored to collector condition.
DESCRIPTION
- Purchased in 2018 by its current keeper, the Golf underwent a two-year sympathetic restoration. In heated storage since covering just 20 miles
- Fitted with a rebuilt 1.6-litre inline-four producing around 110bhp, which is sent to the front wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox
- Striped back to bare metal, it was subject to a glass-out full respray in its original black, black plastic wheel arch extensions with new black plastic bumpers, and sits on refurbed 13-inch alloy wheels
- Retrimmed throughout with new black and grey tartan cloth, new black carpets, and complete with the iconic ‘golf ball’ gear knob
- The original dash and steering wheel were kept, with the added addition of a period-looking modern Blaupunkt radio with Bluetooth
- Supplied with photographic evidence of the restoration, along with invoices, spare wheel
- The 'swallowtail' swage line design is a characteristic of the very first Mk1 Golf GTIs, making them particularly desirable among enthusiasts
- Renowned for kick-starting the modern 'hot hatch' market, this beautifully presented example of the coveted Mk1 GTI has been carefully and sensitively restored to original specifications, with a period-perfect appearance
