SUMMARY

Built by Ian Daniels Motorsport, with motivation from a John Smirthwaite V6, this TVR 3000m rally/race car offers a number of motorsport possibilities.

DESCRIPTION

The TVR 'M' series were produced between 1972 and 1979 replacing the outgoing Vixen and Tuscan models and all are characterised by a common chassis and shared body style. As with all TVR models before and since, the M Series uses a front/mid-engine, rear-wheel drive and GRP body-on-frame construction. This particular part of the TVR story, encompassing the 'M' Series' time in the limelight, is commonly associated with Martin Lilley who, together with his father, took over ownership of the company in late 1965. The 'M' Series cars were regarded by contemporary reviewers as true TVRs with great performance and handling and all the charming idiosyncrasies of a traditional 'Trevor'. They retained styling cues going right back to the early Grantura, but with every development they became more 'civilised'. The range comprised the 1600M, 2500M, 3000M, 3000S, the Taimar and some later Turbo cars.

As a higher performance alternative to the 1600M and 2500M, TVR debuted the 3000M at the October 1972, Earl's Court Motor Show. It was powered by the ubiquitous 3-litre Ford Essex V6 mated to a 4-speed manual box with an optional Laycock overdrive. Just 654 naturally aspirated 3000Ms were built and weighing in at 950kg, they were quick little cars.

Owned by our vendor since 2015, this example is undoubtedly quicker still. Professionally built by Ian Daniels Motorsport for UK/European rallying, the engine was built by the legendary John Smirthwaite and fuelled through triple 42DCNF Webers. It's based on the original V6 block with modified heads, cams and followers and exhausts through a professionally designed exhaust manifold running to a single pipe. Within the history file is a dynamometer print-out showing 240bhp. The gearbox is 4-speed connected to the original differential, polybushed throughout. Brakes are Wilwood and the suspension is adjustable. Fully rewired with a 'Red Top' battery and fitted with a full roll cage and a Perspex rear screen.

Electrics fully re-wired, red top battery and other competition features include a new custom-made dash, new gauges, TerraTrip, navigator's foot brace, Sparco seats and harnesses, fire extinguishers - portable and fixed -, lap timer, race rear LED light and emergency cut-offs etc. As with any competition car, it's essential to check the currency and suitability of any safety equipment (seats, belts, cage, extinguishers etc.).

Should rallying not be your choice of motorsport we understand that, with appropriate modifications, it may be eligible for circuit racing with the HSCC Classics Series and would undoubtedly make a competitive sprint or hill climb car.
