SUMMARY

An early example of one of the original 150 bikes produced by Colin Seeley as 'Phil Read Replicas'.

DESCRIPTION

  • Honda commissioned 400 CB750s to be built by Colin Seeley in 1978 as 'Phil Read Replicas' to celebrate Phil Read's TT victory at the Isle of Man in 1977
  • Based on the CB750F2 but fitted with GRP bodywork, handmade alloy tank, single seat, Cibie twin headlights, and a 4-into-1 exhaust system
  • Following a disagreement with Phil Read, the number of bikes built was reduced to 150, of which 50 examples are known to still exist
  • This example sports a fuel tap on the right-hand side of the tank (as opposed to the left) which makes it one of the first 15 built, however this is unconfirmed since no formal frame number records were ever kept
  • Presented as a project, this bike does run and has undergone a recommissioning by its current owner to get it roadworthy. It appears to be complete with the correct scalloped bottom fuel tank (which has a dent on its right hand side but does not leak), the correct saddle, headlights, GRP body work (with correct supports) and screen. The ignition barrel has been relocated on this example to above the binnacles.
  • Although not fitted in the photographs, it does also come with the correct handmade upswept exhaust, front pipes, and airbox (pictured)
  • The spec includes telescopic front forks and swing-arm rear suspension with a 5-way adjustable shock absorber, dual 10.8 inch front discs and single 11.6 inch rear disc, Com Star five-spoke wheels, 5-speed gearbox and four Keihin 28mm carburettors
  • Odometer shows 58,945 miles and the bike is offered with a UK V5C
  • The frame number is correct but it appears the crank case may have been a factory replacement in-period as it is unstamped
  • Recommission work includes a full fluid service, fork seals, chain and sprocket and a piston service, with various other parts totalling around £500
