DESCRIPTION

At a time when 500cc was the maximum capacity allowed for competition road-racing motorcycles, a high performance 500cc twin was essential to Triumphs marketing strategy in the USA.After Buddy Elmore gained victory in the 1966 Daytona 200 held at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, at an average speed of 96.6 mph aboard a works Triumph Tiger 100, Triumph's Chief Engineer and Designer Doug Hele decided to capitalise on their success with the launch of road going version of that race-winning motorcycle. So the "Daytona R" was born. Improvements included new cylinder head, larger diameter inlet valves and twin Amal Monobloc carburettors. The following year the reputation of this powerful and agile handling lightweight twin was further enhanced when ridden by Gary Nixon, to a second successive victory in the Daytona 200.Originally destined for export to the USA market, a small quantity, making it much rarer, were sold to UK dealerships, as is the case with this Daytona. Indeed, this has always been a UK bike and has never been exported.First registered in the UK in 1969, this motorcycle recently underwent a full restoration to a superior standard and has completed just 900 miles since then.Currently MOT'd and held on a SORN, this matching frame and engine number machine comes with a full history file and is ready to be enjoyed by the new owner.

**We regret that the sale of this motorcycle is postponed to our NEC Classic Motor Show Sale in November...**
