SUMMARY

Thunderbird styling giving that 60's Gerry Anderson feel!

DESCRIPTION

  • One of the most stylish and well-constructed microcars of the era
  • Advanced for its time with a load-bearing body, 4-wheel independent suspension
  • Twin-cylinder, 245cc air-cooled, two-stroke with 13.6bhp/ 4-speed plus reverse
  • Superbly presented in Mint Green with a white cap and in lovely condition throughout
  • Currently supplied with a NOVA ready to be registered as required
  • Active Owner’s Club in Germany and Micro Maniacs in the UK
  • The microcar market of late has seen a real surge in interest and this charming example ticks all the boxes.

Founded in 1951, Hans Glas was a German motorbike manufacturer, active between 1951 and 1969. In 1955, they presented the Goggomobil, a microcar equipped with a rear-mounted, 2-stroke, air-cooled motorcycle engine with an initial displacement of 245cc, subsequently increased to 300cc and, in the final evolution, 400cc. Initially presented with saloon bodywork, the TS 250 Coupé made its debut at the 1957 IFMA international bicycle and motorcycle show and remained in production until 1969 with 66,511 cars finding buyers.

It was particularly well-made, with modern refinements including a load-bearing body, 4-wheel independent suspension, and a 4-speed/ reverse gearbox with a floor mounted change. The bodywork was beautifully proportioned and is still attractive today with a 60s Gerry Anderson /Thunderbird feel. Hugely successful possibly because it was promoted as a "real" car in miniature, rather than one of the many hybrid ‘scooter-mobiles’ on the market at the time.

The unusual name is derived from Hans Glas’ grandson who was a young enthusiast and who’s nickname was Goggi and from there Goggi Mobil quickly became Goggomobil.

With over 250,000 built, a decent number survive, and they are supported by a very active owner’s club based in Germany and the ‘Micro Maniacs Microcar Club’ here in the UK.

This superb TS 250 Coupé is finished in Mint Green with a White cap and a grey interior and is in exceptional condition throughout with lots of pocket-sized appeal. It was restored some years ago to its original factory specification, utilising correct parts wherever possible with handsome execution and attention to detail and has seen little use since. Externally, the paint finish is excellent, highlighting the ‘Thunderbird styling’, with superb panel fit and, once inside, you are greeted by Bakelite knobs and switches and a wonderful period steering wheel all of which adds to that Gerry Anderson feel! Currently not UK registered but is supplied with NOVA certification.

The ‘microcar’ market of late has seen a real surge in interest and this diminutive and compact example ticks all the boxes. A delight to own, totally out of the ordinary and I doubt if you will be parking next to another one in the near future!

‘’ Has formed part of a small collection in recent years, with little use during that time, so an element of recommissioning may well be required’’
