DESCRIPTION

The Mercury Comet was produced by the Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company from 1960 to 1969. The car was based on the standard Ford Falcon 289 with an 'Edsel' split front grille added and canted elliptical taillights for differing aesthetics. It was also given an extra long wheelbase and a higher specification trim. The competition department of Ford took the decision to compete with the car primarily for long-distance rallying, notably on the East African Safari Rally, based on the more suitable long wheelbase and substantially larger fuel tank that the enormous boot made possible.

This particular car was built in 1964 and finished to "Caliente" specification. Fitted with 3-speed C6 auto gearbox, Willwood front calipers and discs, MSD ignition and Weld auto drag wheels. The vendor of this car purchased this specific model due to it's suitability for conversion to an FIA or HSCC pre-1965 spec race car. Recently imported from the USA, it has a solid rust free shell and the period correct panels and interior. Said to drive well, the car will have 12 months MOT by the sale and it could form the basis of a very competitive historic race saloon or just be used for enjoyment on the open road. Offered at no reserve, it could be the bargain of the sale ...
