DESCRIPTION
Pyynikki was a street circuit in the region of Tampere in Finland from 1939 until 1971. The circuit was 3.6km long on public roads through beautiful forests and a small Finnish town in the district of Pyynikki. The road races on motorbikes were known as Pyynikinajot. They were first run in 1932 and were put on hold from 1939 when World War Two started. Racing resumed in 1946 after the war ended and events continued until 1971.
The circuit hosted the 1963 Finnish Grand Prix which was the ninth event in that year's classic road racing championship. In dominant form, Mike Hailwood won both the 500cc and 350cc races on his MV Fours. The 350 race was exciting and closely fought with Mike leading initially before dropping to fifth after a coming together with Russian rider, Sevastjanov. He battled back getting quicker, lap after lap, with the front wheel off the ground in places, passing firstly Sid Mizen on the AJS and then Luigi Taveri on the works 305cc Honda, privateer Gunnarsson on a Norton and finally catching up with Jim Redman on his Honda. A prolonged battle for the lead was finally resolved in Mike’s favour, a memorable win.
This silver vase was awarded to Mike and is suitably engraved 'Kunniapalkinto Pyynikinajo Grand Prix 1963 350cc'.
Offered without Reserve.
