SUMMARY
Celebrating Jaguar's post-war return to building sporting saloons, this elegant Mk V has been subject to a major restoration in the past and has patently been cherished ever since.
DESCRIPTION
- The Jaguar Mk V was officially unveiled on 30/09/1948 and retained the Standard Swallow (SS) drivetrain including the OHV pushrod straight-six 2½ and 3½-litre engines, the 3,485cc six being rated at 126bhp
- The chassis was new, introducing independent front suspension with double wishbones and torsion bars, hydraulic brakes and an all-pressed steel body
- This venerable 3½-litre spent its early life in the Bristol area before being purchased in 2004, by Ken Jones, a well known Rolls-Royce/Bentley collector and JDC member
- A full professional restoration was commenced and was nearly complete before Ken sadly passed away in late 2008
- It was then purchased by our vendor to add to his substantial Collection and has been garaged in a purpose-built, dehumidified facility since
- For a variety of reasons, the restoration was not completed until recently, but the Mk V now starts and runs reliably and drives well. The whole fascinating story is detailed in our Seller Rating and we recommend interested parties take the time to read it
- Classically presented in what we used to call 'Bottle Green' with a beautifully retrimmed, 1930s-style interior in dark cream leather piped in green, suede green carpets and figured Walnut veneers
- Supplied with its original 'buff' logbook, numerous invoices, restoration photos and much more
- Benefiting from a somewhat prolonged restoration and appearing sound throughout, this post-war Jaguar sporting saloon would make an elegant weekend companion for years to come

Remarks
I have had the paintwork polished and some body fitting details dealt with by my preferred local body specialist, which cost some 1500 pounds.

Remarks
I have previously restored the interior, had woodwork re-fitted and the interior re-trimmed properly finished by the trimmer I have used for all my classic cars, at a cost of over 2000 pounds. This trimmer cannot be hurried but is worth waiting for; in this instance I think he had the Mk V in his workshop for the best part of a year.

Vehicle History
Remarks
To summarise the history as I know it, the V5c shows 3 owners, including myself. The original buff logbook lists another 7 owners, the last recorded having acquired it in April 1971. The owner before me had workshop facilities at his home, with a full-time mechanic. In my ownership the car has been kept in a purpose built de-humidified wooden garage, along with 5 other of our Jaguars. The only exception has been when the car was being actively worked on in my home workshop or by relevant specialists at their premises. At the time of purchase, I had access to a local Jaguar mechanic who visited on average 2 days a week to look after our cars. He got the Mk V up and running properly over a period of time and it passed an MoT in 2012, which I think at time was still required for it to go back on the road. A great deal of time-consuming and fiddly work was needed during this stage, as is usually the case in the teething period after a major restoration, but not too much expenditure on parts. There are no labour receipts for this period because I was simply paying by the hour for whatever needed to be done on any of our cars. In summary then, MAE 855 is now a nice old car, in very good presentable and useable condition and ready to be enjoyed by a new owner. It only needs to find a new home now because my wife and I are now in our 70s, we have too large a collection to use properly and we need to rationalise.
