SUMMARY
A distinguished and beautifully specified 1981 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow in Caribbean Blue with Beige leather, accompanied by an exceptional continuous service history from new.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Launched in 1977 as the final evolution of the Shadow line, the Silver Shadow II introduced several key refinements over its predecessor, including rack-and-pinion steering and revised suspension geometry, improving both handling and road feel. With its graceful proportions, opulent interior, and commanding presence, the Shadow II was the definitive British luxury saloon of its day—equally suited to town or touring duties.
The Car:
Delivered new in March 1981 to Martin Walter Ltd. of Canterbury, this Silver Shadow II was ordered in Caribbean Blue with a Beige leather interior, including a hide-trimmed instrument board. The original purchase invoice lists a price of £36,431, and the car was specified from new with Quartz Iodine headlights, which have recently been sympathetically upgraded for modern usability.
The early history sees the car in the Bournemouth area until 1986, at which point it was exported to Switzerland under the ownership of the Hotel Excelsior. It returned to the UK shortly thereafter, where it resided in Eaton Square, London. During this period, the car was maintained by respected specialists Weybridge Automobiles.
From 2005, care passed to renowned marque experts RR&B and Frank Dale of London. In 2013, it was acquired by the current keeper, who has continued to preserve the car to a high standard, with dry storage and regular conditioning via battery tender.
Recent work includes a £2,500 specialist service and an upgraded lighting system. The suspension has also been uprated, improving road manners without compromising the signature ride comfort.
The car drives exceptionally well and is mechanically on point, with no hesitations and smooth operation throughout. A small cosmetic bubble is noted beneath the offside front wing, though this does not detract from the overall presentation.
