SUMMARY
Rare Gen 2 996 GT3 Clubsport finished in the instantly recognisable and period-perfect Guards Red with an extensive service history.
DESCRIPTION
Introduced at the turn of the millennium, the 996-generation GT3 marked Porsche’s return to building a truly homologation-inspired road car, closely aligned with its contemporary Cup and RSR race machinery. The Clubsport package elevated this already focused model further still, stripping away superfluity in favour of purity, purpose and driver engagement — a philosophy that today defines the most sought-after modern Porsches.
This rare Gen 2 996 GT3 Clubsport is finished in the instantly recognisable and period-perfect Guards Red, specified from new with the factory Clubsport equipment. Highlights include the original welded-in roll cage, fixed-back bucket seats with harness provision and (normally) the highly desirable Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). Notably, this example was also specified in 'Top Gear'-spec with air-conditioning delete, contributing to an overall reduction in dry weight of approximately 30-40kg compared with a standard GT3 — a meaningful saving in a car where every kilogram matters.
Power comes from the revered Mezger-derived 3.6-litre flat-six, celebrated for its durability, throttle response and unmistakable motorsport lineage. Free from electronic interference and paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 996.2 GT3 remains one of the most visceral and rewarding 911s ever produced — a reputation that has only strengthened with time.
This example is accompanied by an extensive and reassuring service history, with recent attention carried out by respected Surrey-based Porsche specialist Nine Excellence, and earlier works undertaken by leading names including RPM Technik, Charles Ivey Porsche, and other recognised OEM specialists. Our vendor had a full PPI on purchase that showed the engine in great condition with no Range 2 over-revs and camshaft variation readings within factory tolerances and the PCCB discs are in very good condition.
Benefitting from a full ceramic coating, the car presents in excellent order throughout. This is a rare and authentic Clubsport (there are half the number of Clubsport cars than the 996 RS) that has enjoyed period recognition, having featured in several Porsche publications, including a front-cover appearance in 911 & Porsche World in October 2022.
As values continue to harden for analogue, motorsport-derived 911s, especially those with factory Clubsport specification, the 996.2 GT3 stands as one of the most compelling and usable modern Porsche icons and examples of this quality and provenance are becoming increasingly difficult to replicate.
