SUMMARY
Rare, BMW-Powered South African-spec Land Rover Defender 90 2.8i – one of just 656 built.
DESCRIPTION
A true collector’s gem, this exceptionally rare Land Rover Defender 90 2.8i is one of only 656 examples produced exclusively for the South African market. Built under BMW’s ownership of Land Rover, it features the acclaimed 2.8-litre BMW M52 straight-six petrol engine – a smooth, torquey unit producing 142kW (190bhp) and 280Nm of torque. Acceleration is brisk for a Defender, with 0–60mph covered in just 9.1 seconds. Mated to the robust R380 5-speed manual transmission with high and low range, and full time four-wheel drive, this model is widely regarded by Land Rover engineers both in Solihull and South Africa as the ultimate factory built petrol Defender.
This example, designated MYL 009 by South African marque specialists, MadeYouLook, has been extensively maintained and refurbished to an 'as new' standard. Presented in Alpine White, it stands in remarkably original condition with no evidence of corrosion, no replaced chassis members, and a factory-specification under-bonnet area that is untouched and unrestored. It would be difficult to find a 25 year old Defender in such clean, correct and factory-presented condition.
Factory power-assisted steering and air-conditioning are fitted as standard, alongside an extra long-range fuel tank for extended touring. The vehicle rides on heavy duty 16" black 5-spoke alloy wheels, shod in BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres (235/85) all round. The bodywork is straight and true, with excellent panel fit, original trim and well aligned closures throughout. All glass, lights, and exterior rubberwork are in excellent condition.
The interior is trimmed in grey anthracite leather, including upgraded leather-covered dashboard and steering wheel. Seating, door cards and all interior panels are presented in superb order. Modern CD/MP3/radio units have been tastefully integrated. The vehicle shows mileage in kilometres (KPH), and a current MOT with no advisories is valid for the next eight months. The engine bay is exceptionally clean, free from corrosion or damage, and still carries its original chassis stamp. Underneath, the chassis is similarly preserved, with no signs of damage or previous repair, giving confidence in the structural originality and ongoing usability of the vehicle.
A lovely detail adding heritage value is the hand-written signature on the bonnet from renowned South African explorer Kingsley Holgate – a nod to this Defender’s roots and its association with adventure.
This Defender is eligible for registration in various international markets, and is offered with supporting paperwork including MOT records and South African export certification.
Combining rarity, mechanical pedigree and extraordinary condition, MYL 009 presents a unique opportunity to own one of the finest examples of a factory-built petrol Defender. As collectible as it is capable, this BMW-powered Defender 90 2.8i is ready for its next chapter, whether in continued preservation, weekend touring or overland adventure.
