SUMMARY

Classically presented, Guards Red 3.3-litre Turbo with less than 10,000 miles since a mechanical refresh by the much respected Tony Greatorex in Cheshire. Everyone needs to own a Guards Red 930 Turbo at least once in their life.

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 911 Turbo, introduced in 1975, would remain in production until 1989, and was sufficiently different from previous versions to earn a new 930 model number. These were proper Supercars, amongst the fastest production cars available at the time, and are now felt by many to be the cars that defined the early eighties. Developed initially for homologation purposes, the turbocharged 911 was first seen at the 1973 Paris Auto Show as a prototype, essentially to gauge reaction and went on sale a couple of years later as the 911(930) Turbo. The basic engine underpinnings came from the Carrera 2.7 RS with the capacity increased to 3.0-litres and, of course, turbocharged using the vast amount of recent experience with forced air induction that Porsche had gained from their 917/30 Can-Am programme. Externally distinctive with its whale tail rear spoiler, wide tyres, bulging wheel arches and macho stance, 930s were surprisingly civilised with air conditioning, electric windows, a leather interior (in some), tinted glass, headlamp washers and Bilstein shock absorbers as standard.

This charming 1981 Porsche 911 (930) 3.3-litre Turbo was purchased by our vendor in May 2016 from Stratstone Ferrari, Wilmslow when it had covered 63,500 miles. Prior to our vendor's purchase, Stratstone had taken the car to marque specialists, Tony Greatorex in Cheshire, who removed the engine and gearbox and supplied a new clutch assembly, removed the timing chain housings and fitting all new seals, gaskets and cam lock nuts, turbo charger feed pipes, new engine breather hose, new turbo inlet hoses and intercooler seals. They also supplied a new right-hand stainless heat exchanger, all new oil pipes, changed the engine oil and filter, fitted two new hot air control valves, renewed the rear roll-bar bushes and new drop links, fitted a new steering column top bearing and checked through the braking system.

Whilst in his ownership, our vendor has covered less than 10,000 miles in the car, with the odometer currently reading 73,275 miles and has kept it regularly serviced and maintained by Stratstone Ferrari Service. Beautifully patinated and presented in Guards Red with a black leather interior, it is supplied with a V5C registration document, MOT certificate valid until November 2026, and a file containing its service book, historic receipts and, uniquely, a period cased Porsche maintenance kit of polishes and oils, gifted to our vendor by his late friend, who’d want to see it go with the car.
