An exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire an unrestored, single owner Toyota Carina TA40 in remarkable, time-warp condition. Supplied new in 1978 and sparingly used throughout its life, this charming saloon has been dry stored for the majority of the last four decades, only emerging each year for its annual MOT before returning to storage. As a result, it remains one of the most original examples of Toyota’s dependable mid-size saloon we have encountered.
Still retaining its original tyres dated 1978, the car presents in untouched condition throughout, offering an authentic glimpse into late 1970s Japanese manufacturing quality. Even the 1983 paraphernalia remains in the boot, a delightful reminder of its preserved state and careful ownership.
The accompanying Toyota service book contains three main dealer stamps, the last recorded at just 2,448 miles, with a handwritten log of additional work on the back page. A selection of old MOT certificates further corroborates the car’s exceptionally low usage over the years, while the original sales receipt and sundry paperwork add to its outstanding provenance.
Recently, the car has benefited from a light and sympathetic mechanical refurbishment to ensure safe running without compromising originality. This included stripping and cleaning the entire braking system, replacing the rear brake cylinders, brake hoses and fluid, re-coring the original radiator, fitting several new/old stock water hoses and installing a new battery.
Rarely do Japanese family cars of this era survive in such pure, unrestored, one owner form. With remarkable originality, low-mileage, period documentation and careful recent recommissioning, this Toyota Carina represents an exceptional collector’s piece and a unique opportunity for any enthusiast of preserved classics or Japanese motoring history.
