DESCRIPTION
Launched in 1975, the Triumph TR7 represented a bold and controversial departure for the marque. Styled by Harris Mann, its sharp wedge profile and abrupt tail divided opinion but marked Triumph’s attempt to modernise both its image and competition prospects. That ambition was soon carried onto the stages, where the TR7 became British Leyland’s chosen chariot for international rallying during the latter half of the 1970s.
From 1976 to 1980, Works-entered TR7s competed extensively in international rallying under Shell sponsorship, initially powered by the 16-valve Dolomite Sprint engine before later evolving into V8-powered machines that paved the way for the TR8. The TR7 proved particularly effective on tarmac events, with drivers such as Tony Pond achieving notable success and helping to re-establish Triumph’s competition credibility at a critical time for the brand.
This 1977 Triumph TR7 has been constructed as a faithful Group 4 rally car, built largely from new components and completed in 2015. It has seen minimal use since completion, having competed in just one Isle of Man Historic Rally, and one classic tour. The bodyshell is an ex-Works Shell (Charles Golding’s spare bodyshell) distinguishable with the roll cage welded directly into the A-pillars, a significant detail for a competition TR7.
Mechanically, the car has been assembled to a high standard with competition use firmly in mind, motivated by a John Eales-built V8 engine running Pierburg-type fuel injection. The drivetrain and running gear are complemented by Group 4-specification brakes and suspension, while a new rally wiring loom has been installed to ensure reliability and ease of maintenance.
The car has had an MSA logbook and historic papers, and while these will now require updating, the car is unchanged so updating/renewing them should theoretically be straight forward. Inside, the cockpit is properly prepared for rally use, featuring rally seats, harnesses and fire extinguishers, the harness and extinguisher both requiring renewal to meet current regulations. The overall presentation is very good and certainly very useable.
It's also accompanied by eight brand new Compomotive motorsport wheels 13 x 7" in the same Minilite style.
Offered as a correctly specified and lightly used Group 4 TR7 rally car, this example represents an excellent opportunity for historic rallying, demonstration events, touring or further development. Built with care, using appropriate components and benefiting from minimal post-build use, it offers an authentic route into period Triumph competition machinery at a fraction of the cost of building one today.

Uplift by EM Rogers back to their storage facility in Northampton is £175 plus VAT for a standard sized vehicle and prices start from £275 plus VAT for larger vehicles. Storage will be charged at £12 plus VAT per day from the Monday for the first 14 days then £40 + vat per week from there on.
