SUMMARY

Original left-hand drive, ex-California 911S, fully restored in 2010 and recreated as a faithful 2.7 RS Touring replica in Gulf Blue.

DESCRIPTION

Porsche revived the Carrera name for its luxuriously equipped, top of the range 911 in 1973. Designated Carrera RS (RennSport), the newcomer was intended as a limited edition product for 'Group 4' GT racing, a class that required a minimum of 500 built. However, the resulting demand for this fabulous car proved so great that the production run was later extended by 1,300 or so units. Based on a lightened 911S platform, the Carrera RS featured revised suspension and wider rear wheels (beneath flared arches) for improved handling, while the 2.7-litre, fuel-injected, air-cooled six-cylinder engine’s 210bhp boosted top speed to around 150mph. Not merely a styling gimmick, the Carrera’s trademark 'duck’s tail' spoiler made a vital contribution to high speed stability, a virtue of increasing importance as power outputs continued to rise. Rare and highly sought after, original examples of the 1973 RS are now very expensive, a state of affairs that has inspired many a Porsche enthusiast to create replicas of what was one of the defining sports cars of its era.

Originally delivered new to California in Chocolate Brown with a tan interior, this US-specification, H-series 911S was supplied through Sierra Porsche. In around 2010, the car underwent a full restoration and was built into a faithful 2.7 RS Touring replica.

Purchased by our vendor in 2020, the history file includes an inspection report from Steinbacher dated 2018 confirming the car to be in excellent order. In the spring of 2016, Blue Palm Service AG of Switzerland carried out a comprehensive rebuild of both the engine and gearbox ensuring that the Porsche performs as it should.

Now finished in Gulf Blue (one of the less common 1973 RS colours) with black RS graphics, the paintwork remains in good condition and the car is equipped with the correctly shaped fibreglass ducktail spoiler. The interior features the appropriate half corduroy and half leather seats along with fresh door cards and carpets replaced by Hall and Hall in 2024.

This 911 is UK-registered having also spent time in Switzerland and is reported to run and drive very well. It is offered from a private collection where it has been properly maintained and enjoyed. Available via separate negotiation post sale is a 3-litre SC engine which the vendor had considered using for a race car conversion although this project was never undertaken.

If an original 1973 2.7 RS is a tad outside the budget, this beautifully presented replica must surely be the next best thing.
