SUMMARY
This glorious 2000 GTV was purchased from Salvage Hunters:Classic Cars, having starred in the show and has been further enhanced by its enthusiast owner.
DESCRIPTION
On its launch in 1972, the 2000 GT Veloce retained its predecessor's (the 1750 GTV) coachwork but with minor detail styling changes, and offered improved performance courtesy of its torquey 132bhp engine. Drivers' cars par excellence in the best Alfa Romeo tradition, Bertone's timelessly elegant Giulia-based coupés are among the most exciting sports models of the 1960s and 1970s.
This beautiful 2000 GTV started its life on the road in South Africa where it was sent new in right-hand drive in January 1975 as a ‘knock down kit’ (CKD) prior to final assembly in the Alfa factory in Booysens, Johannesburg. SA’s favourable climate makes it a popular choice for people sourcing right-hand drive Alfas, and this example arrived in the UK in 2001 (having covered some 69,000km).
It remained a cherished original classic until 2021 when it was selected to feature in an episode of Drew Pritchard’s Salvage Hunters:Classic Cars who, at great expense, turned it into a fast road 'Veloce' sitting between a GTV and a GTA. They called upon a number of leading Alfa marque specialists and the new specification included a Stage 2 Alfaholics fast road suspension package (Kit C 2" drop), four new 7 x15 GTA wheels with new Michelin tyres and an Alfaholics exhaust system. Cloverleaf Transmissions rebuilt the rear axle and fitted a limited-slip differential and a rebuilt manual gearbox was supplied by Alfaholics to replace the car’s automatic transmission. The rear brake calipers were replaced and braided hoses fitted and the car benefited from new carpets, meshed grille, bespoke cloverleaf gear knob, billet aluminium pedals and a heated screen. The show featuring the Alfa was broadcast on 20th December 2021.
The car was purchased from the show by our vendor who has continued to make this 2000 GTV as perfect and enjoyable to drive as possible. He had the engine rebuilt by renowned Historic Alfa race experts, Brunswick Automotive Ltd, in fast road specification with electronic ignition and it now it produces a very healthy 169bhp confirmed by a rolling-road printout in the history file. It has recently been entrusted to Quest Brothers Classic Cars where any paint blemishes have been rectified and the engine bay nicely detailed, followed by a retrim with the distinctive GTV seats recovered in beautiful tan leather.
It’s supplied with its V5C, a large history file, a number of invoices from the recent restoration and a Certificate from Alfa Romeo confirming its build date.
Originally styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone, these pretty 105-Series coupés look particularly special with period updates and this GTV is no exception, with nearly £30,000 lavished on some very tasteful enhancements. Recent auction result show they are still on an upward trajectory and they don’t come much more sorted than this impressive example.
