SUMMARY
A charming example of Honda’s early enlarged monkey bike concept. Largely original throughout and offered in running and riding condition. No paperwork currently supplied, though a replacement V5C has been applied for with the DVLA. Offered without reserve.
DESCRIPTION
- With the introduction of the CZ100 in 1960, Honda effectively created the genre that would become known as the ‘monkey bike’, defined by compact dimensions, playful styling, and easy usability. The concept evolved through the late 1960s with the arrival of the ST70 Dax in 1969 - a larger, more practical machine featuring a spine-type frame and bigger wheels
- In 1972, Honda expanded the idea further with the launch of the Chaly, offered in both 50cc and 72cc forms. Unlike the Dax, the Chaly employed an open-frame design with small leg shields that partially enclosed the engine, lending it a distinctive, scooter-like appearance while retaining the simplicity and charm of a small motorcycle
- This example was acquired by our vendor in July 2010 and used as a pit bike at race meetings, a role to which the Chaly is ideally suited. It remains largely original and is reported to be in running and riding condition. No documentation accompanies the machine at present, however, a replacement V5C has been applied for with the DVLA
- A delightful and increasingly collectable Honda, the Chaly offers enormous nostalgic appeal and represents a fun, usable entry into classic Japanese lightweights, whether for display, light use, or continued paddock duties
