SUMMARY

An unrepeatable opportunity to secure a matching-numbers, UK-supplied Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupé featuring the Type 911/83 RS engine, finished in ultra-rare Mexico Blue.

DESCRIPTION

Introduced for the 1974 model year, the Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI occupies a fascinating and often overlooked position within the classic 911 lineage. Developed directly from the Carrera 2.7 RS, it retained the same mechanically fuel-injected 2.7-litre Type 911/83 flat-six with magnesium crankcase and much of the RS’ underlying engineering philosophy, packaged in a more refined and usable road car format. Producing around 210bhp, the Carrera MFI delivered sharp throttle response, excellent mid-range performance and a character that closely mirrored its competition-bred predecessor. According to data from the Carrera 2.7 MFI Register, just 1,633 Coupé were manufactured. Sources suggest that only 114 examples were produced in right-hand drive, with 48 reserved for the UK market. The Carrera 2.7 MFI is widely regarded as one of the purest expressions of Porsche’s early 1970s engineering approach, combining lightweight construction, motorsport-derived technology and real-world usability.

Offered here at Race Retro 2026 is a very early, UK-supplied, right-hand drive Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupé, a 1974 model-year example first registered in November 1973. Finished in its original shade of Mexico Blue with Midnight Leatherette and Shetland inlays, it is understood to be one of just two right-hand drive Coupés specified in this striking period colour.

Our vendor is a lifelong Porsche enthusiast who discovered the 911 after it had been off the road since the mid-1980s. Following several years of negotiation, a deal was finally agreed and a thorough, yet sympathetic, restoration was commissioned. More of a careful recommissioning than an outright restoration, the approach focused on retaining as much originality as possible. As part of the work, the engine and gearbox were removed and inspected by a recognised marque specialist, primarily to address typical oil leaks. This included the installation of all new seals, with compression tests carried out and a new ignition system fitted, all readings within tolerance. New Bilstein suspension, new clutch and new brakes were also fitted all round at this time.

In January 2026, the 911 was fully serviced and tuned by the renowned Porsche specialist Elkin Robinson and this included fresh oils, new spark plugs, suspension ride-height adjustment, a new alternator, renewed gear selector bushes, and recalibration of the selector forks.

As a very early UK example, it retains several interesting features, including the round Durant external mirror, which was deleted in many other markets as the glass area failed to meet local regulations. It also features the strengthened gearbox mounting area carried over from the RS model. We are informed by our vendor that Porsche Club GB has confirmed the car retains its matching-numbers engine and gearbox, and that it still wears its correct Fuchs alloy wheels, all with matching date stamps.

The car is accompanied by a history file including the V5C registration document, invoices detailing recommissioning works, invoices for maintenance over the years, and a Porsche Club GB booklet featuring the car during the 1980s. We are informed that on test the Porsche fired up on the button and performed every bit as well as it looks.
