DESCRIPTION
For many classic sports car enthusiasts, the 1970s evoke memories of attractive cars, beautiful people, long hair and flared trousers. It’s a ‘date stamp’ in time, a crossover between mechanical development and artistic beauty, before designers’ focus shifted toward meeting safety regulations and aerodynamic efficiency. At this point, every Porsche buyer craved success, to be associated with Porsche was to be associated with winning. In 1970 and 1971, the Wyer Engineering/Gulf 917s absolutely dominated endurance racing, driven by the top Grand Prix drivers of the era, it was a very good time to be seen driving a Porsche.
The 1973 model year Porsche 911 captures this moment in history perfectly. By then, the flat-six engine had evolved to 2.4-litres and, in 'S' specification, was equipped with mechanical fuel-injection producing a healthy 187bhp. It also featured the revised 915 gearbox, a well judged suspension setup and capable brakes.
All of this makes a 1973 Porsche 911 S an especially desirable collector’s car, timelessly attractive, beautifully balanced, with sharp acceleration, light and communicative steering, and pure, unfiltered analogue driving pleasure. On the road or at classic sports car events, they attract exactly the right kind of attention, never flash, just effortlessly cool.
A UK-supplied, right-hand drive example in fine order is a very rare find indeed, and the car offered here at the Classic Motor Show meets every criterion for the discerning collector or dedicated enthusiast. According to the Porsche archives, chassis #911 330 0773 was manufactured in January 1973 and supplied new by AFN Limited of London, finished in special order Gemini Blue with a black leatherette interior, and first registered as PYN 82L.
Today, this special 911 presents beautifully still finished in its stunning Gemini Metallic Blue, with black leatherette Recaro sports seats. It retains its matching numbers engine, original registration, and an overall sense of originality and integrity that’s rare to see. It comes to auction fresh from a private collection of landmark classics, accompanied by an extensive history file including a wealth of invoices, the original owner’s book, a detailed ownership record, old MOTs and supporting documents. Over the years it has been cared for by some of the best names in the business, including Autofarm.
The Porsche 911 2.4 S truly is the best of the last and the last of the best, and with some careful detailing there is an opportunity to raise this example up to the next level in terms of presentation. Both collectors and enthusiasts will appreciate its authenticity, provenance and especially the factory colour way – it is utterly wholesome and quite simply stunning.
