SUMMARY
A beautifully executed RS-inspired 911, blending classic competition aesthetics with fastidious ownership and thrilling road presence.
DESCRIPTION
Porsche revived the Carrera name for its luxuriously equipped, top of the range 911 in 1973. Designated Carrera RS (RennSport), the newcomer was intended as a limited edition product for 'Group 4' GT racing, a class that required a minimum of 500 built. However, the resulting demand for this fabulous car proved so great that the production run was later extended by 1,300 or so units. Based on a lightened 911 S platform, the Carrera RS featured revised suspension and wider rear wheels (beneath flared arches) for improved handling, while the 2.7-litre, fuel-injected, air-cooled six-cylinder engine’s 210bhp boosted top speed to around 150mph. Not merely a styling gimmick, the Carrera’s trademark 'duck’s tail' spoiler made a vital contribution to high speed stability, a virtue of increasing importance as power outputs continued to rise. Rare and highly sought after, original examples of the 1973 RS are now very expensive, a state of affairs that has inspired many a Porsche enthusiast to create replicas of what was one of the defining sports cars of its era.
Forming part of a small and discerning private Porsche collection in recent years, this striking example has been maintained with care and attention, receiving work as and when required to keep it in excellent order. Recently refinished in eye-catching Porsche Light Yellow, it presents superbly and is both tax and MOT exempt.
This left-hand drive 3.0 RS Homage was originally converted in 1996 by marque specialist Dave Evans at CarTec, featuring all-steel flared arches and, as one would hope, the desirable 'no sunroof' configuration. Power is delivered by a spirited 2.7-litre engine, breathing through Weber carburettors and paired with a 5-speed 915 gearbox, offering an engaging and authentic driving experience.
The car sits on exceptionally rare three-piece split-rim Fuchs-style alloy wheels, manufactured by Compomotive for Dage Sport Porsche, measuring eight inches at the front and an imposing 11 inches at the rear. Further enhancements include a front strut brace and front-mounted oil cooler, underlining its purposeful intent.
The suspension has been the subject of recent attention, with new Koni dampers at the rear, powder coated anti-roll bars, fully refurbished and painted components, poly-bushed throughout, and new rear drop links. Braking has also been addressed with new rear callipers and refurbished front units, all finished in subtle matt black.
Inside, the cabin is equally well-considered, featuring a new Momo steering wheel, Cobra RSR bucket seats trimmed with cord centres and matching headrests, complemented by Willans harnesses. A full roll cage is included, with the rear section currently installed and the front section previously fitted but now removed. Accompanying the car is a small selection of spares, including a sports exhaust, rear seats and panels, and RS door cards, to be collected from the vendor post-sale.
A true head-turner with undeniable presence, this evocative Porsche offers immense appeal to enthusiasts. Sensibly estimated at a figure representing a fraction of its build cost, your early inspection is strongly encouraged to fully appreciate the quality and character on offer.
