SUMMARY
A 1969 B-series 911T rebuilt as an homage to the legendary 2.7 RS, fitted with a recently rebuilt genuine, fast road-spec 2.7 and classically presented in Guards Red.
DESCRIPTION
This remarkable 1969 911T was sold new by VW main dealer, Bill Yates Inc., to a Mr David Lee Adams of South Laguna, California. It lived a life in the US until it was purchased by a German owner in 2015 who repatriated the Porsche back to Germany. Prior to this, however its final US owner had prepared the car for fast-road work and had sourced a genuine 2.7-litre flat-six which he had built to competition-spec and paired with a genuine 901 5-speed gearbox. We understand that he was not trying to recreate a 2.7 RS but just wanted a quick, fun 911 and it was adorned with a 'whale tail' and big wheels.
The engine featured high compression JE Pistons, Carrera cams, new oversized valves with uprated springs, a balanced flywheel, Lumenation optronic ignition, a reconditioned Bosch distributor with braded silicone plug leads and a Bosch coil, Weber 40 IDA carburettors with K&N air filters, stainless steel heat exchangers, and a new Dansk stainless exhaust.
The cabin is mostly original and fitted with front inertia-reel belts, a Nardi 36" 1970s period steering wheel, original Blaupunkt radio, RS-style door cards, new Coco mats and the correct Black Desa RS lightweight Recaro-style reclining lightweight seats in Black Perlon from Italy. The switch gear is fully functional and the dashtop and trim are in good condition displaying minimal signs of wear throughout.
When it arrived in Germany in 2015 it wasn't running correctly and its new owner planned to recommission the car and get it running properly, however a major spinal injury curtailed his plans and the Porsche was offered for sale having never been registered in Germany. After prolonged negotiations, it was purchased by our vendor during 'lockdown' in 2020 and UK-registered as an Historic Vehicle on 1st August 2020. He saw it as the perfect basis to create an homage to the legendary 1973 2.7RS so work commenced with an engine rebuild which was entrusted to Mark Chilton of specialists, Club Autosport. Initial findings included incorrect timing and the compression was too high. After crack testing the cams, a hairline fracture was found, so new genuine Carrera cams and new valves were fitted. All parts were vapour blasted and cleaned, the distributor was rebuilt, the Weber carburettors were placed in a sonic bath and rebuilt using a genuine Weber kit. A total of 70 hours of labour went into rebuilding and setting up, which was then followed by an initial rolling road tune at BH performance (Dyno sheet on file) but as it was being 'run in', the engine wasn't pushed above 4,500rpm. The initial figures were very promising and it's expected to make c.210-220bhp.
The 'whale tail' and wheels etc. were removed and replaced with the correct engine cover and RS arches professionally crafted to the rear quarters. RS-spec suspension, freshly refurbed and zinc-plated Carrera front brakes, SC rears, and HD torsion bars have now been fitted and the car sits on a set of 15" x 7 & 8" Maxilite Fuchs wheels with anodised finish and new factory-correct Pirelli Cinturatos. As you can see from our images, the car now presents beautifully in Guards Red with black Carrera decals.
It's supplied with the original service booklet with some stamps, its original drivers manual and other accompanying documents pertaining to its time in the US. From this point onward, invoices outline the meticulous process of sourcing, upgrading and maintaining this exceptional 911, with the UK paper trail alone amounting to £30,000. Accompanied by its original tool roll, jack and two sets of keys.
With the looks and performance of a genuine 2.7 RS, but at less than 20% of the latter's asking price, this desirable 911T - RS Homage deserves your close inspection at our NEC Sale.
