SUMMARY

A beautifully prepared, UK-supplied TR5 in Valencia Blue, blending show-winning presentation with a freshly rebuilt 200bhp 2.5-litre engine, a new chassis and further upgrades. A worthy concours-winner that's benefited from significant expenditure. Simply exceptional.

DESCRIPTION

The TR5 was launched in October 1967 and outwardly, the car was barely discernible from the TR4A, but the new engine, complete with Lucas fuel-injection, turned the 5 into a genuine performance car, with a handy 150bhp on tap. Realistically, the car was effectively a stop-gap and only had to last around two years until Karmann had finished its work on the replacement, the TR6, however, with the benefit of hindsight, the TR5 is arguably the best of the lot, enjoying the great unsullied looks of the TR4 but with the raunchiness of the TR6. Only 2,947 TR5s were ever built, with 1,161 of those being finished for the UK-market and, today, only around 500 are believed to remain on UK roads.

Of the few hundred that remain, most have been restored and present well, however we would doubt that many are finished to the same remarkable standard as UPD 478F. In gleaming Valencia Blue, complemented by a Biscuit leather interior with drop-down headrests, providing useful luggage space behind the seats. It's accompanied by a rare Surrey hardtop with a Burgundy Mohair quick-release weather panel while period Cosmic alloy wheels complete the car’s stunning appearance.

An original UK-supplied, right-hand drive example, first registered on 11th April 1968, this superb TR5 has enjoyed an enviable life within TR Register circles. Originally restored by the late, Nigel Bancroft, a well known name among Triumph enthusiasts and recognised for his craftsmanship and knowledge of the marque, the car has since continued to impress on the show scene. In 2023 it was chosen as Organisers Choice at the TR Register’s International Concours, run by Graham Andrews – a fitting recognition of its quality and attention to detail.

More recently, the 2.5-litre EFI straight-six has been totally rebuilt incorporating Jenvey throttle bodies, an Emerald ECU and a steel crank and now produces over 200bhp, supported by the accompanying dyno graph. A stainless steel straight-through exhaust and ceramic-coated manifold enhance both performance and sound, whilst the underside was treated to a new CTM powder-coated chassis, brake pipes and fuel lines, prior to being detailed and refinished in body-coloured Tough OX stone protection ensuring that the TR is as sound and dependable as it is good looking. Other developments include a suspension upgrade from original lever arms to Koni dampers, Wilwood 4-pot calipers and brake discs and Classic Driving Developments upgraded front stub axles and rear drive shafts.

The Triumph presents beautifully throughout, indicating 54,690 miles at the time of cataloguing, and has been enjoyed in the same careful ownership for the past ten years. Along with its accompanying history file, the it's is offered with an MOT until May 2026 with no advisories. NB. The Surrey hardtop is not currently fully fitted and will need to be taken home separately.

This is a fastidiously prepared and very capable TR5 with proven Concours credentials and significant mechanical investment that is equally at home on the show field or the open road, an excellent opportunity to acquire one of Triumph’s most desirable six-cylinder sports cars.
