SUMMARY
A beautifully presented, left-hand drive, manual gearbox 'Pagoda' with hardtop, recently overhauled by marque specialist Colin Ferns.
DESCRIPTION
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 230SL, internally coded W113, marked a new chapter in the Stuttgart marque’s sporting lineage. Replacing the 190SL, the 230SL introduced a level of sophistication and design purity that would come to define the SL name for decades. Styled under the direction of Paul Bracq, its more angular lines were both elegant and purposeful, crowned by the distinctive concave hardtop roof that inspired the ‘Pagoda’ nickname. Beneath the bodywork lay Mercedes-Benz’s new 2.3-litre straight-six engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, all-round independent suspension, and front disc brakes, creating a car that balanced performance, refinement, and reliability in a way few could match at the time.
The 1966 230SL offered here represents one of the most desirable configurations of the model, fitted with the rare and engaging 4-speed manual gearbox and supplied complete with its factory hardtop. It has been the subject of an older restoration, beginning in 2014 and completed in 2018, which returned the car to a condition that is both stunning and useable. The presentation is very good throughout, with straight bodywork, excellent panel fit, and deep paintwork. The attention to detail is incredible, meaning this Pagoda could be enjoyed equally at a pub trip, road trip or on the show field.
Since completion, the car has continued to be maintained to a very high standard. In spring/summer 2025 it benefited from a major service including a new clutch and two new Michelin tyres. Accompanying documentation confirms that over £12,000 has been invested in recent mechanical work by renowned marque specialist Colin Ferns who personally inspected this example, rating it an impressive 9/10, with his written assessment included within the car’s comprehensive history file.
The 230SL was notable for combining sporting ability with long distance comfort, and this car continues to embody that ideal. The interior presents beautifully, with supple upholstery, a clean and correct dashboard, and bright instrumentation. The hardtop fits well, and the soft top stows neatly. A full photographic record documents the restoration in detail, illustrating the quality of the work undertaken and the condition of the car at every stage.
Accompanying the vehicle is an extensive history file containing invoices, service records, and the aforementioned inspection report, attesting to the care and attention this car has received. With its desirable specification, expert preparation, and tasteful restoration, this example offers the rare combination of quality, usability, and authenticity.
The 230SL rightfully remains one of the marque’s most enduring and well balanced designs, admired equally for its aesthetic charm and engineering excellence. This beautifully prepared, manual gearbox example stands ready for its next custodian to enjoy, whether as a refined touring companion or a centrepiece in a classic collection.
