DESCRIPTION

Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962, the MG B would turn out to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. Attractively styled, cheap to run and easily maintained by the home mechanic, the 'B' carried on MG's traditional role of providing affordable, open-top, sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast. Its popularity remains undiminished today and the classic MG B is one of the easiest sports cars of its era to run and maintain in the 21st Century, being served by an extensive industry of spare parts and service providers. Over the last ten decades, virtually every model of MG has been raced by someone, somewhere, with the ‘B’ undoubtedly the most numerous. They continue to feature worldwide in modern Historic racing, being easy to drive, relatively cheap to run, and eligible for numerous race series here in the UK, both at Club and National level.

No better racing series has shone a light on the appeal of the MG B as a race car than the recently debuted Generations Trophy, where each family team must consist of two drivers from different generations, competing at the wheel of a pre-1966 MG B. Its inaugural debut at Silverstone in October 2025 was a huge success as it gears up to running its first full series in 2026. Some 20 cross-generational MG B crews took to the track, a mix of dads and daughters and dads and sons and, in one case, grandfather and granddaughter. Teams included historic race ace Andy Wolfe (rather more familiar with Lotus Twin-Cams), and daughter Nicole, Touring Car Ace Patrick Watts with daughter Aimee, Richard Hammond and daughter Isabel, plus our own Chairman, Nick Whale, and son Harry.

The car presented here is a 1964 ‘pull handle’ MG B to FIA specification originally built by Hertfordshire-based, MG Motorsport Ltd. It’s accompanied by a comprehensive file of paperwork documenting previous owners and notably it was campaigned by Kathy Sherry prior to our vendor’s purchase in September 2024. The FIA papers have just been renewed, so are current to 2035, the fire extinguisher was recharged just 12 months ago, and the belts and seat are in-date and correct for the events entered. As with any competition car it’s worth checking the currency and suitability of all safety equipment including the roll-cage, bag tanks and ignition cut-outs etc.

The 1,798cc engine was newly rebuilt by MASS Racing prior our vendor’s ownership and has now had 14 hours of running. During his ownership basic maintenance has been completed in-house but it has been returned to MG Motorsport for other work, which included a gearbox overhaul and the replacement of a half-shaft (all invoices are available). The car has been thoroughly enjoyed by our vendor and his son, as their first foray into circuit racing, and has acquitted itself well in Equipe, CSCC, Classic K and Swinging 60s events. They are selling the car purely because they have purchased a Mk1 Lotus Cortina.

Beautifully presented in what appears to be Tahiti Blue and exceptionally well detailed, the MG is accompanied by a quantity of spare parts including a distributor, coils, side lamp, a Cobra Monaco seat, six spare wheels, plus many other miscellaneous items. Professionally built to a high-specification, well maintained, on offer from diligent ownership and with the cachet of long in-date FIA HTP papers, this is a highly desirable MG B racer eligible for a huge variety of prestigious events throughout the UK and Europe.
