SUMMARY

1960 Formula 2 car built by Laystall Engineering and originally powered by a Coventry Climax FPF engine. Ex-1960 German Grand Prix with Henry Taylor. A rare opportunity to acquire a one-off historically interesting race car as a project to finish. Offered without reserve.

DESCRIPTION

The 1960 German Grand Prix was a Formula Two race held on 31st July 1960 at the Nurburgring but run on the shorter Sudschleife layout. Due to decreasing attendances after the departure of Mercedes-Benz and the controversial 1959 race at AVUS, it was decided to race on the shorter layout to give spectators a better show and the race was run to F2 regulations, which were set to replace Formula One for 1961 anyway.

Entered by the UDT-Laystall Racing Team, Henry Taylor in his Laystall-Climax (this car - well the chassis anyway) placed the car 21st on the grid with a time that was only 20 seconds short of Jo Bonnier in the works Porsche on a three minute 20 second lap, which was quite an impressive debut and in atrocious weather conditions, the car finished 13th ahead of Schlesser, Bianchi, Gendebien, Trintignant, and Masten Gregory. It took part in other races but a later mishap with Tony Brookes meant the car was sidelined pending repairs and life moved on.

On offer today is this original ex-German GP F2 chassis with a dummy FPF Climax and wearing a beautiful and costly new aluminium body by Roach Engineering in 2007. Some further work was carried out by Simon Hadfield pending a full restoration but, sadly, that hasn't happened yet.

This is a special opportunity to acquire a one-off, historically interesting, 1960s Formula Two car restoration project to finish which, when complete, would generate enormous interest and may even be eligible for prestigious motorsport events.

We understand from our vendor that the car will be accompanied by lots of photographs, correspondence, build info etc. Offered without reserve.
