SUMMARY
A remarkably well-finished 356A GT Lightweight homage, executed with exceptional attention to detail and offering the visual impact of a period competition Porsche at a fraction of the cost.
DESCRIPTION
The Porsche 356A Carrera GT/GT Lightweight Coupé was a purpose-built competition model developed for international GT racing and long-distance endurance events. Produced in very small numbers, it represented the most focused and technically advanced iteration of the 356 platform, powered by the legendary Fuhrmann-designed four-cam Carrera engine. To reduce weight and improve performance, the GT Lightweight featured aluminium body panels, thinner-gauge steel where applicable, Plexiglas side and rear windows, minimal interior trim with Speedster-style bucket seats, uprated brakes, strengthened suspension components and close-ratio gearing.
These cars were campaigned extensively in period, competing with notable success in events such as Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, the Carrera Panamericana and numerous European GT championships, cementing the Carrera GT’s reputation as one of Porsche’s most effective early competition cars and a cornerstone of the marque’s motorsport history.
Offered here at Race Retro 2026 is a smartly executed homage to the Porsche 356A GT Lightweight, finished in Silbermetall (Silver Metallic R608) with red leather upholstery and matching carpets. According to official Porsche documents within the history file, chassis #100193 was supplied new to Munich in 1957, finished in a similar colour combination and originally equipped with a 60bhp engine.
The car appears to have been restored to a high standard throughout and upgraded with careful attention to detail. Features include lightweight bucket seats, half cage, Perspex front and rear windows, neatly fitted leather bonnet straps, and a lightweight boot lid with additional ventilation, all in keeping with the GT Lightweight aesthetic.
Our vendor acquired this eye-catching 356A from one of Europe’s most highly regarded historic Porsche specialists, Maxted-Page Limited, in 2010 and it was subsequently UK-registered and issued the registration number 370 YUB. Since then, it has been mostly maintained by Porsche, dry stored, and has formed part of a private Collection, only enjoyed on an occasional basis. The odometer shows just 1,275km which is understood to be the distance covered since the restoration.
To prepare the car for auction the 356 is currently undergoing pre-sale preparation with renowned classic Porsche specialists Autofarm (1973) Ltd. The works will include a comprehensive service and inspection, with the resulting report made available to interested parties.
Offered for Auction as surplus to requirements, this well-presented homage is ready for its next chapter. When considering the cost involved in creating a build of this quality and specification, it represents an appealing opportunity at the guide price offered.
