SUMMARY
Part of the late Alan McCoy Collection. Vincent series C Grey Flash replica, built by 'Pip' Harper and affectionately known as 'Buttercup' and was owned by Alan since 1991.
DESCRIPTION
- The Comet was the single-cylinder stablemate to the legendary Rapide and Black Shadow, sharing much of their advanced engineering in a lighter, more manageable package
- Powered by a 499cc OHV single producing around 28bhp, the Comet was capable of speeds approaching 90mph – remarkable performance for a ½-litre machine of the early 1950s
- Built around Vincent’s innovative 'backbone' frame with cantilever rear suspension, the Comet delivered handling and comfort far ahead of its contemporaries. High quality cycle parts, excellent brakes, and refined engineering made it one of the most sophisticated singles of its day
- With production ending in 1955, surviving Comets are increasingly sought after, prized for their usability, rarity, and direct link to the most celebrated British motorcycles of the post-war era
- The Comet was the basis for the Grey Flash, a tuned and lightened race machine, built for track and road and marketed as 'Black Lightening out of a Comet'
- Engine supplied new in 1951 to Blacknell's in Nottingham
- This example was built in the 1970's by 'Pip' Harper and is presented in mostly unrestored condition
- Fitted with a correct Albion Gearbox
- Still using its original Vincent frame and 'girdraulic' front forks, fitted with a full fairing and painted in a very distinctive bright yellow
- Known affectionately by the family as 'Buttercup'
- Complete with a V5C and old RF60 buff log book but numbers do not relate to the bike, so therefore unregistered
- Frame number not seen
- Great looking period modified Grey Flash replica
- Currently not UK-registered
