SUMMARY

An unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a museum-quality, exquisitely restored Mercedes-Benz 170 S, offered with a remarkable connection to Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe.

DESCRIPTION

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Mercedes-Benz faced the considerable challenge of rebuilding its reputation in a changed world. Central to that recovery was the 170-series, derived from the pre-war 170 V first introduced in 1936. A technically advanced car for its time, it featured an oval-tube backbone chassis, independent front suspension and swing-axle rear, establishing a benchmark for durability, engineering integrity and understated luxury.

The later 170 S represented a more refined and upmarket evolution, aimed at discerning buyers seeking comfort and sophistication. Retaining the 1.7-litre capacity but benefiting from an aluminium-alloy cylinder head and increased compression, power rose to 52bhp. Chassis improvements included double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs, a widened rear track and telescopic dampers, resulting in a noticeably more composed and refined driving experience.

The example offered here was the subject of an exceptional, no-expense-spared restoration, carried out with an extraordinary level of attention to detail. Adding to its appeal is its fascinating historical connection as research indicates that this particular car was the personal transportation of Marilyn Monroe during a stay in Greece in 1956. Imported through the port of Piraeus in February that year, the car is supported by period insurance documentation signed ‘Marilyn Monroe,’ covering February to August 1956. This coincides with her time in Europe prior to her return to the United States when she married playwright Arthur Miller in June of that year.

This provenance was uncovered by the current owner following the discovery of fitted luggage bearing ‘MM’ insignia and a bespoke dashboard plaque. Extensive research through Greek registration and insurance archives ultimately led to the discovery of the insurance certificate which has since been apostilled, notarised and certified by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, lending significant credibility to the car’s historical narrative. The same documentation confirms the car’s classification at the time as a ‘Special Category Vehicle’ a designation typically reserved for high-profile individuals, likely affording a degree of discretion and protection from public attention.

Acquired by its current owner over a decade ago, the car was subsequently entrusted to Brookfield Classic Cars for a comprehensive restoration overseen by respected specialists Steve Nott and Gavin Bicknell. The work undertaken was extensive, with the car completely dismantled and rebuilt to exacting standards. Components were sourced from original suppliers where possible or remanufactured using factory drawings and period-correct methods, with reference taken from an unrestored ‘reference car’ and input from former Sindelfingen engineers.

The result is a restoration of exceptional quality, with meticulous attention paid to every detail, from major mechanical components down to individual fasteners and finishes.

Accompanying the car is a substantial history file including restoration invoices, a Mercedes-Benz data card confirming matching numbers, the Greek insurance certificate signed by Marilyn Monroe, official apostille and notarisation documents, supporting correspondence from the Mercedes-Benz Owners’ Club, and photographic records of both the restoration and reference vehicle.

In summary, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored and historically intriguing Mercedes-Benz, combining period engineering excellence with a unique and well-documented link to one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century. It would make a compelling addition to any collection of landmark motorcars, a museum display centred on celebrity artefacts, or indeed for an enthusiast with an appreciation for significant post-war classics with a fascinating story to tell.
